What documents do I need to sell my car?

For us to purchase your car, we will require the current V5C registration certificate in your current address, the vehicle's service history, current MOT certificate (if applicable) and any bills or receipts you may have from any work work undertaken on the vehicle.

What do you need when you purchase my car?

When we come to purchase your vehicle there are certain items we require:

  • V5C registration certificate – this needs to be in the name of the current keeper of the vehicle
  • Service history – the vehicle’s service book and bills showing the service history
  • MOT certificates – if applicable, past and current MOT certificates
  • Repair bills and receipts- any records of mechanical work undertaken on the vehicle
  • Two keys – the valuation provided online will be based on the vehicle having two keys
  • The extras – for example, locking wheel nut keys, sat nav SD cards and radio codes
  • Finance settlement letter – if we’re settling finance on your vehicle, we require documentation from the finance company before we can purchase the vehicle
  • Bank details – have your bank details ready so we can arrange the secure payment. It needs to be the account for the current owner of the vehicle as stated on the V5C registration certificate.

What if my car has outstanding finance?

No problem, at mycar4cash we’re happy to purchase vehicles with any outstanding finance. For us to do this, we will require a current settlement figure in writing from the finance company (within 7 days), including the agreement reference number. We will then pay the finance company directly to settle amounts owed. Any equity is returned to you.

Can I sell my car to you if I have outstanding finance on it that is more than the car is worth?

Yes. A current settlement figure in writing (with the agreement reference number) from the finance company will be required. We will then pay the finance company directly to settle amounts owed. Any shortfall would need to be paid by you, to us, with cleared funds.

Do I require a full service history on my vehicle?

​No, a full service history is not required. However, the value of a vehicle with a full service history will be higher than one with part of no service history.

Do I need any forms of ID to sell my vehicle?

To purchase your vehicle we require two forms of personal identification:

  • Valid photo ID – this could be your driving licence or passport
  • Copy of address – this could be a utility bill or bank statement

If the V5C registration document is not in your current address we will need additional proofs of ID.

How long do I need to have owned the vehicle that I intend to sell?

Here at mycar4cash we will require a copy of your original purchase invoice or proof of payment (from a reputable dealer) if you have been the registered keeper of a vehicle for less than 12 months.

Will you guarantee to buy my car for the online valuation?

All valuations provided online are subject to inspection and full appraisal of the vehicle and are not a contractual offer to purchase the vehicle. The online valuation provides a guide price guide based on the leading industry guide and does not take into account any lack of service history, damage or modifications to the vehicle for example.

How long is my online valuation valid for?

The valuation you receive online is valid for 7 days, as is any valuation provided to you at a personal inspection. After this period, it will unfortunately not be valid and the vehicle will have to be revalued. The market changes frequently so we alter our prices to reflect this. Please remember, the valuation you receive online at mycar4cash is not a contractual guarantee.

How do I make an appointment?

What happens during my vehicle inspection?

Before we visit you and your vehicle, you will be assigned with one of our expert vehicle valuators who will introduce themselves to you and provide their contact details. We do this first so you know precisely who to expect at the valuation. During the inspection, your personal valuator will view the vehicle and ask you any questions in relation to the vehicle. We’re a really friendly, experienced group of local people who want to provide you with the very best price for your vehicle. We are incredibly proud to offer you a polite and professional approach to buying your car.

What happens after my vehicle inspection?

If after the inspection you’re happy to proceed with the sale of your vehicle we can arrange payment and collection details. Should the valuation not meet your satisfaction, or you would just prefer a little more time to think about it, then no problem. We’re friendly, local people who will never hassle you to sell your vehicle. Your valuation is guaranteed for 7 days from inspection so if or when you’re ready to sell just contact your dedicated expert.

How quickly can you complete the purchase?

We aim to complete the purchase of your vehicle in a maximum of three working days, but this can be quicker. Options can be discussed with your dedicated valuation specialist.

What does ‘subject to inspection’ mean?

The valuation you receive from our free online tool is dependent on several factors that you tell us about your vehicle so is therefore not a contract to purchase your car. Once a viewing appointment has been arranged, at a time and place convenient for you, you will be assigned with one of our expert valuators who will inspect the vehicle. It’s not until we inspect your car that we can offer you a guaranteed final price to purchase your vehicle. In some cases, we may find that after inspection the vehicle may be worth a little more than our online valuation tool.

How does the payment process work?

Once a valuation and purchase has been agreed we will arrange payment directly and securely into your chosen bank account within 3 days with no charge. It is possible to pay funds the same day for your car; however there may be a small additional charge for this. Our friendly experts will be happy to discuss this with you.

Do you charge an admin fee?

In most cases we do not charge an admin fee for three-day payment directly into your bank account. If you require the payment the same day, there may be a small additional fee. Our friendly experts will be happy to discuss this with you.

What do I do with my road tax?

If there is any road fund license due back to you this will be refunded directly by the DVLA. Our dedicated experts will be happy to guide you through this process.

What if my car has a personalised registration number?

No problem, we are still happy to purchase your car.

If you want to keep your personalised registration it’s easy to transfer it to another vehicle or put it on retention for use at a later date on another vehicle. You can do this online with the DVLA. Our experts will be happy to assist you with this, however we cannot do it for you directly. What’s more, any charge incurred for this from the DVLA will be your responsibility.

What if my car has no MOT?

At mycar4cash we’re happy to purchase your vehicle if it doesn’t currently have an MOT, however it’s worth remembering that this may have an overall affect on the value we provide.

If we need to recover the vehicle, there may be additional transportation and collection costs. We will discuss this with you before we make any arrangements to purchase your vehicle.

What if I don’t have a V5C registration certificate?

Unfortunately if you don’t have a V5C for your vehicle then we will not be in a position to purchase it. However, you can obtain a new V5C registration document from the DVLA. Visit their website for more details.

If we need to recover the vehicle, there may be additional transportation and collection costs. We will discuss this with you before we make any arrangements.

Where do I drop my car off?

Unlike other online car purchase companies, here at mycar4cash we are happy to come and view your vehicle at a time and place convenient for you. If however it is easier for you to visit us, you can arrange an appointment with our approved partners at their site.

Do you buy any car?

We buy any make or model of car. The only criteria it has to meet is outlined in this FAQ section.

What if my car is damaged?

We’re still happy to purchase damaged vehicles although this will have an affect on the valuation we provide online. Our helpful valuations team will be happy to inspect the vehicle and provide a valuation.

Can I sell my non-running car?

We’re happy to purchase a non-running vehicle, although this may have an affect on the overall valuation. If we need to recover the vehicle, there may be additional transportation and collection costs. We will discuss this with you before we make any arrangements.

Do you buy insurance write off cars?

Unfortunately not.

Do you buy imported cars?

There are two types of imported vehicles:

  • “parallel” import (purchased within the European Union);
  • “grey” import (purchased outside of the European Union).

We will only purchase “parallel” imported vehicles, although this may have an affect on the valuation. Proof of VAT paid will be required. We don’t currently purchase “grey” imported vehicles.

Do you buy cars that are registered outside the British mainland?

Do you buy modified cars?

At mycar4cash we are happy to purchase vehicles with modifications, however the valuation may vary depending on the scale of the modification. Our helpful valuations team will be happy to inspect the vehicle and discuss this with you.

Can I sell a car on behalf of another family member?

In short, yes, you can sell your car on behalf of a family member without putting the car in your name. We will require proof and copy of any relevant documentation to confirm you are able to sell the vehicle on behalf of your family member (for example a power of attorney letter).

Can I sell a deceased relatives car?

It’s an incredibly stressful time having to deal with the passing of a relative and having to sell their vehicle can be daunting. We will be happy to help you with the process of purchasing a vehicle however we will require certain documents dependent to complete the purchase. Please speak to a member of our dedicated valuations team who will be more than happy to discuss this with you in greater detail.

What if my vehicle has an insurance black box fitted?

We would still love to purchase your vehicle, however you will need to have it professionally removed before we purchase the vehicle. We would recommend you contact your insurance / black box provider to discuss removal.

Do you purchase learner school vehicles?

Yes we do, even with the extra dual control pedals still fitted.

Do you purchase private hire / tax vehicles?

At present, we don’t currently purchase private hire or tax vehicles.

Do you purchase from the motor trade?

We do not currently purchase vehicles from the motor trade.

Can I sell a vehicle on behalf of a company?

You can sell a vehicle to us at mycar4cash on behalf of a company, but must provide the following:

  • A form of photo identification of the individual bringing the car
  • Written authorisation from a company Director (registered on Companies House) to sell on behalf of their company
  • Company account details, for example company bank statement and or paying in book
  • Form of identification for the business address, for example a utility bill

If further identification is required your expert valuator will discuss this with you.
